La Crema has two locations in the Russian River Valley.  Their Estate at Saralee’s Vineyard provides a full wine country experience with private seated tastings, tours of the property, and picnic tables.  The second location is a tasting room in downtown Healdsburg with a much more casual, lounge type of vibe.  I’ve always considered La Crema to be a household name.  It’s one of the first wines I was introduced to, and I became a fan of their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay right away.  That’s what drew me into visiting.

It’s been a few years since my husband and I first visited the tasting room.  I was excited for it because I always liked their wines, and the in-person experience tends to make it even better!  The tasting room is right off the square in downtown Healdsburg.  It looks very modern inside with stark white walls and wide open space.  There’s a tasting bar near the front entrance and a second reserve tasting room in the back.  Since I was already familiar with the standard La Crema wines, I opted to do a reserve tasting.

The reserve room is set up like a lounge with a big L-shaped comfy couch in one corner.  There was a group of people there when we arrived, which is to be expected for a popular winery toward the end of the day.  My husband and I stood around for a bit trying to be patient.  Unfortunately no one acknowledged us for a while, and once we worked our way in to let the host know we wanted to do a tasting, we got minimal explanations of what was being poured.  Unfortunately I left feeling bummed about our mediocre experience.

I insisted on waiting to write about La Crema because I felt they needed a second chance.  This time I wanted to visit the estate.  It took a few years to arrange that, but now I feel like I’ve had the true experience.  My husband and I set up a private tasting at the Estate at Saralee’s Vineyard.  The estate is tucked away down some back roads.  The main tasting room looks like a lodge centered in the middle of a vineyard.  Out front were some people enjoying a beautiful day at some picnic tables.  A hostess greeted us as we approached the front entrance.  We were set up for a seated tasting on the back patio looking out over the vineyard.

To get to the patio, we walked through the sleek looking tasting room.  The front half had tiled floors and colorful paintings on the walls.  The ceilings were paneled in wood to give that lodge feel.  The space was expansive.  In one corner there were comfy chairs for individuals to lounge around.  Across the room was a counter for purchases.  Toward the back of the room where the patio was located, there was another stand-up tasting bar with people gathered around it, as well as additional high-top tables for indoor tastings.  There were lots of people there, but it didn’t feel crowded at all because it was so spacious.  The outside patio was covered to provide shade and there were several tables set up for groups of 2-4.  It was so serene.  We had a hostess who came directly to our table to pour 6 wines and educate us on the vineyards they came from.  We started off with a sparkling rosé and then tried two chardonnays and three pinot noirs.  These were single vineyard wines that are not mass produced and they were all lovely.  I was so much happier with this experience than the tasting room.  I’m glad I visited the estate.

I certainly don’t want to give a bad impression of the tasting room.  We happened to be there when they were busy and didn’t get the service we were looking for.  However, it’s still a nice place to check out when in downtown Healdsburg. If you are like me and really want the full winery experience, I would definitely recommend making the extra effort to make a reservation at the estate.

I visited the Hawley tasting room in downtown Healdsburg upon a recommendation from our tour guide at Bella Winery.  I believe in the adage to “always trust the locals”.  Hawley Vineyards and Winery is actually located in Dry Creek Valley.  The property sits 1000 ft. above sea level on Bradford Mountain. Ten acres of the estate are planted to Merlot, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Viognier. This winery is owned by John and Dana Hawley who moved onto the property in 1975.  The vineyard at the time was rundown.  John tried to produce wine from the vines with not much success.  He ended up tearing them out and starting over. Between 1990 and 1996 John worked as chief winemaker for Kendall Jackson.  The Merlot from his property was the core of Kendall Jackson’s reserve program.  John produced the first vintage under the Hawley label in 1995.  The winery became certified organic in 2006.

The tasting room and gallery is located off a side street in downtown Healdsburg.  The tasting room is modest with artwork by Dana Hawley and wine barrel furniture built by their son Austin. The tasting experience was reasonably priced, offering a taste of 4 wines for $10 or all 9 wines for $20.  The tasting room has a rustic, cozy feel.  The space isn’t incredibly large, but there is enough seating for a few groups of people at a time.  I thought the tasting bar made from barrel staves was pretty cool.  In the center of the space were some stools and a wooden table.  There was also a wooden park bench and a couple of comfy leather chairs. There were also a few wine barrel Adirondack chairs outside the front door of the tasting room for those who prefer to hang outside. Dana’s artwork was displayed on the walls.  Both the artwork and some of the furniture were available for purchase.  The estate is not open to the public, but they do offer vineyard tours and experiences by reservation, such as a blending class or picnic.

I really enjoyed all of the wines. My husband and I sampled their flagship Viogner with lovely citrus flavors, a delightfully light Chardonnay, a fruity Pinot Nori, and a jammy Zinfandel.  We took some home with us and left feeling grateful for the recommendation to visit.

Twomey Cellars has two locations, one in Napa and the other in the Russian River Valley in Sonoma.  This winery is owned by the Silver Oak family who is very well known for their prestigious Cabernet Sauvignon.  David and Tim Duncan started Twomey in 1999 because they wanted to spread their wings into other varietals.  They have been applying their wine expertise to create food-friendly wines like Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.

My husband and I visited the Sonoma winery.  The winery is located right outside the town of Healdsburg.  It is a modern facility that blends into the landscape.  Out front of the tasting room is a large stone wall with a waterfall.  A tall glass doorway leads into the tasting room and glass windows continue all along the back side of tasting room looking out onto a patio and vineyards.  The tasting room is wide open with a very modern flair.  The tasting bar is white with a metal counter top situated toward the left corner looking toward the patio.  There are cool pendant lights hanging from the wood panel ceiling over the bar.  The room is quite spacious.  On the right side of the room is some seating.  There’s also a gift area across from the tasting bar.  Guests are welcome to taste at the bar, grab a seat around the room, or go outside to the patio with a nice view of the valley.

Twomey’s tasting menu included samplings of their three varietals – Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Pinot Noir.  I got to sample a 2006 and a 2009 Napa Valley Merlot side-by-side.  It’s always intriguing to me to get to compare wines like this and see how different they can vary from one year to the next.  The 2006 was smoky and could pair with steak while the 2009 had a lot of cherry and would pair well with BBQ.  My personal favorite from the tasting was the Bien Nacido Pinot Noir with rich berries and mocha flavors.  It was velvety smooth.  I had a few bottles shipped home.
